Oral Assessment in Math: International Versions
Problems of assessment in this post-COVID and AI-fixated era has led to exploring alternatives to standard practice in the USA. Other countries have used oral assessment in mathematics, and exploring those experiences can shed light on best practices for that method.

AI as a Faculty Thought Partner
Artificial intelligence is often discussed in broad, technical, or academic-integrity terms, leaving many instructors unsure how it can support their own day-to-day work. This session demonstrates practical ways AI can function as a faculty thought partner, especially during a time when teaching, communication, and student needs are rapidly changing. Through examples, participants will see how AI can help prepare for meetings, strengthen professional and student-facing communication, synthesize notes or feedback, and support data-informed decision-making. The session will emphasize responsible use, including source-of-truth practices, validation, and human judgment. Participants will leave with simple prompt examples and a one-page resource they can use immediately in their own teaching and professional workflows.

Why Your Calculator Never Lied and ChatGPT Does
A plain-English look under the hood at why LLM's have historically struggled with arithmetic. We’ll explore why a system designed to predict what comes next in text can stumble over a question as simple as “Is 9.11 bigger than 9.9?” Then we’ll look at what changed when AI systems began writing and running code, using tools, and switching from prediction to actual computation. Most importantly, you’ll learn how to recognize which kind of reasoning your AI is using and when you should trust the answer.
10:40 - 11:30 a.m.

Let's Talk about PDF Accessibility
Regulatory requirements to make our courses digitally accessible are getting close. Are your documents ready? I'll briefly cover key concerns in digital accessibility, including: Working with scanned notes! Formatting Word documents! Alt tags for mathematical images! Trials and tribulations of LaTeX accessibility! Myths, lies, and half-truths about PDFs! What about OER? This talk is short, actionable advice specific to math faculty.
